"Friendship With The World Makes You An Enemy Of God"

James is my favorite book in the Bible, but man, there's some tough stuff in there. In chapter four, he lays it out really straight. You adulterers, he says, Don't you realize that friendship with the world makes you an enemy of God? I say it again. If you want to be a friend of the world, you've made yourself an enemy of God. Listen, one of the things I love about the Bible is that if you read it slowly, you let it sink in. It's super challenging, but it really helps clarify your faith. And James isn't saying don't have any friends in the world. He's talking about a back and forth relationship that gets directed by the world in our culture around us. There's all kinds of ways that I get caught up being enamored by the culture, and I want to be like the culture rather than being set apart for God's kingdom. And he even uses that harsh analogy saying that when our hearts are divided like this, it's like adultery in our relationship with God. As a follower of Jesus, it's important to have a daily practice to examine any part of my heart that's more concerned about being like the culture than it is falling in love with my God.
